What actually happens during tattooing?

A tattoo machine moves a needle module up and down many times per second. The process is more precise than the popular image of a needle simply injecting colour.

The needle module carries pigment

Before each pass, pigment wets the needles and spaces between them. During the downward movement, the needle tips open tiny channels through the epidermis into the dermis. Pigment follows the moving needles and is transferred into those channels.

No true vacuum is created

People sometimes describe the process as a vacuum sucking ink into the skin. That is an oversimplification. Pigment transport is influenced by needle motion, adhesion, capillary effects, fluid movement and tissue displacement; the machine does not create a sealed vacuum like a pump.

The body responds

Tattooing creates a controlled wound. Immune cells react, the skin begins repair and some pigment is removed while much remains embedded in the dermal tissue. Correct hygiene, technique and aftercare reduce avoidable risks during this process.

Why skill matters

Needle grouping, machine settings, hand speed, angle, stretch and pressure must work together. The artist continually reads the skin and adjusts the technique to the motif and body site.
