Understanding tattoo needles

A tattoo needle module contains one or more fine needles in a defined arrangement. The choice influences line character, pigment delivery, shading and how the skin is worked.

Diameter and taper

Needle diameter is commonly shown as a code or millimetre value. Frequently used diameters include roughly 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35 mm. A smaller diameter can create finer marks, while a larger diameter may deliver more pigment – but the result also depends on grouping and technique.

Taper describes how gradually the tip narrows. A longer taper creates a longer, finer point; a shorter taper reaches full diameter sooner. Neither is universally better: the suitable choice depends on the intended effect and the skin.

Round groupings

Round liners (RL) hold needles tightly in a circle for defined lines. Round shaders (RS) use a looser circular grouping for small fills, soft shading or bolder effects. Hollow liners form a ring with an open centre and can deliver distinctive, solid lines.

Magnums and flat groupings

Magnums arrange needles in two staggered rows and are widely used for shading and larger fills. Curved or soft-edge magnums raise the outer needles relative to the centre, so they meet the skin later and can support softer transitions. Flat groupings place needles in a straight row for specific graphic or filling tasks.

Knowledge must become judgement

Module labels alone do not determine a result. Artists combine needle choice with machine stroke, voltage or speed, hand movement, depth, angle, pigment and skin tension. Safe, style-appropriate work requires training, practice and constant observation.
